water polo widow

In theory it sould be really good. Even the title sounds tempting.

The Delicious Miss Dahl.

Is it just me or is it just not convincing enough? Put on some weight love and then we might believe that you enjoy your food.

Of course I had a little chuckle at myself being so judgmental when I sat down to watch, Pot Noodle in hand! Shame on me.

not so easy third time

Well I am pleased to say that a little crochet has been happening.

I am mighty sick of big projects at the moment and have decided to partake in some mega satisfying quickies.

Stealing from Posy's blog I made a crochet hanger cover. The hardest part was finding an old wooden hanger. Luckily my sister in law came up trumps. As they say one mans junk is anothers treasure!

Lovely, lovely, lovely, I need to do more. Any ideas where I can find hangers?

Crochet bobbles are my other latest craze. Thank you Jo for sharing the pattern with me.

Crochet has been my saviour today. Little enjoyable projects. Suppose I am still tired from the weekend and should really STOP complaining. I am boring myself!

what a cop out

Try number two at the caravan.

Didn't go to plan.

Of course.

The house in the woods decided to have a party. VERY loud music. VERY loud people. Until 2.30am. It was VERY hard to sleep as you can imagine. Is someone trying to tell us something?

All I can say is I hope that the culprits have VERY bad hangovers!

Back at home the skies turned grey and we had absolutely torrential rain, the sky looked a really dramatic colour. That I couldn't capture on camera, but I tried!

On the knitting front I am still cracking on with my cable scarf. Its a two thirds there.

Hope that you had a better weekend than me!

handbag shopping

The Johnsons Holiday Skin streaked by the way. Think that the fact that it is last years bottle didn't help. I normally find it so good.

Why don't you tell me about your day? I would love to hear from you too.

two boys

Yesterday was a day of housework. Two and a half weeks off school does not add up to a pretty house, as I'm sure you know!

Today was, quite unexpectedly, a day for me.

Had my hair done, managed a couple of charity shops and spent the afternoon with friend chatting. Yes, I know it sounds really 'lady of leisure' but I felt like I deserved it after my terrible weekend.

Of course I have managed to do a few mummy chores, the weekly shop, the final wash of the sicky sleeping bag, the swimming lessons - hey, it's never ending.

In Tesco's I bought a pair of short jogging bottoms. Am sure that there is a name for them but am getting quite out of touch with the fashion world these days. They are gathered under the knee. And I promise you they will only be worn at home (they are very comfy - fit lovely) - if I can't give them their proper name I am obviously too old to wear them outdoors!

Back home I tried them on. They are nude coloured. Truly. My legs are the same colour as them. Very unflattering. Cue Johnson's Holiday Skin, the first outing this year and it seems such a waste. For goodness sake it was snowing yesterday but who knows? Maybe tomorrow it will be cracking the flags.

xx

ps. I am over 1000 hits! Ok, I know that 500 are probably me but hey, it's a milestone anyway.
Thank you if you read me! Comment!

the eternal spot

Not a lot of craft has been going on recently.

Not a lot of blogging has been going on recently.

The holidays have stretched out and time has flown by.

I have never mentioned before that we have our own little caravan. A rather old little touring caravan.

It is tired and in need of some love and we havn't used the poor thing for nearly a year (husband resents the amount we pay for storage and wants to sell it) so I decided that we would make our usual trip to our favourite Harrogate farm this weekend and play house (it really is like that in a tourer, like a grown up Wendy house).

(picture above is from about five years ago, probably our first trip to this farm)

Anyway, having collected said caravan on Thursday, husband cleaned the outside and I had big plans to clean the inside on Friday.

Ha Ha, no you don't. I felt really ill on Friday, headache bordering on migrane and felt like I was going to pass out at any minute. I felt really guilty as husband tried his best to spring clean the interior, determined that we would enjoy our last weekend of the holidays.

I managed to get up at 1.30pm and from my bed directed the kids on what they needed to pack, 'two pairs of pants, two pairs of socks, one vest - bring them to me' - you get how it went. Bless them.

We got there, and the weather was glorious, the location is glorious. I was feeling better. All I needed was a good nights sleep.

Ha Ha, no you don't. 9.30pm Billy Flint was sick EVERYWHERE. On his new sleeping bag, on his pyjamas, on his hands, on his legs, I had no sick bowl, he was in a BUNK BED for goodness sake we couldn't even move him. The best I could do was to supply lots of kitchen roll. Nasty.

Trapped in a tin box with no hot water, no Dettol and no space is a nightmare for someone like me who has to immediately disinfect the whole house once someone is sick. Can you feel my panic?

Cue quick pack up, throw everything in the car, turn off the gas and electric and LEAVE (luckily we know the owner of the site well so knew that she wouldn't mind if we left the van there for a month if need be).

Following morning, kids want to return. Harrogate is not far so we could manage a happy Saturday night, couldn't we?

Ha, Ha, of course not. We forgot to take the keys back with us. And I am ashamed to say we were that xxxxed off by then that we broke in to our own caravan, via the window and a BBQ fork.

Then the battery went flat at dusk so we had no lights or water.

And I am thinking 'if last night was bad with Billy Flint at least we had water and light. If it's a bug and Tilly Mint gets it tonight all we have is a wind up torch'.

I even missed the big car boot sale that I frequent everytime we visit Harrogate. Bummer.

Getting home was rather sweet (I could freely wash my hands)!

Not sure how I feel about going back next weekend to collect the van. Think it is doomed. No only joking, think it needs a jolly good service and think we just need better luck next time!

Please cross your fingers for us. Don't know if I can cope with that again.

three's a crowd

Seeing as this post is now a week old it feels rather odd writing it, writing a diary a week late. To save me getting confused I am going to write in the present tense.

Only a few days left 'til the children break up for the Easter holidays and with this in mind, knowing that my time will no longer be my own I decided that the rather brown bananas needed a makeover. My favorite kind of makeover, the Nigella makeover.

Now previously for her 'Banana and Butterscotch Muffins' I have substituted the toffee for chocolate (not by choice by sheer frustration that I can't find butterscotch chunks in the home baking aisle of neither Sainsburys, Tesco or Asda and we are not blessed with a Waitrose). They always go down very well anyway.

But, thank you Silver Spoon (have you noticed that they have brought out a new home baking range and it's really rather lovely. Even the packaging is quite tempting). I can now try fudge pieces in my muffins which come quite close to butterscotch, I think.

It has made a world of difference they are sooooooo much better than with chocolate.

Hmmm. That is not a flattering picture. Promise they are not really burnt.

Thats better, a much more tasty photograph.

So, on the same shopping trip to Sainsburys, where I found the fudge pieces, I bought a new cookery book. I had seen the series on TV recently and was especially impressed with the large amount of Emma Bridgewater china that they use (how shallow is that). The cooking seemed quite good too!

Having a good look through later I found quite a large number of recipes that I used to bake with my Mum. It is true Mum knows best! Coffee Kisses were a huge favorite.

Of course in those days we had never heard of bikers baking, let alone hairy ones, so our recipe came from the good old Be-Ro Home Recipes book.

and it was a recipe that my Gran used and found in her Be-Ro Home Recipes book

and its a recipe that is in my Be-Ro Home Recipes book

and they are just as lovely as I remember, especially when my own children have had a hand in them as well.

Other recipes in the Hairy Bikers were Empire biscuits, as seen below in my Grans handwritten recipe keeper (sorry, v. bad photo I know) and one of my Mums faves, Key Lime Pie (such a treat on New Years Eve).

Don't think I fancy the cough mixture as outlined below though!

And after all that retro baking it's lovely to wash up with retro washing up liquid. I tell you, this bottle will be washed and reused FORever!

On the knitty front, variegated cardi is finished (well, it was a few weeks ago actually) and no I havn't worn it out yet.

and my new project is a lovely cable scarf which I am very proud of because I am knitting it without the pattern! (thanks Ari).

Yes, I know it's the wrong time of year to be starting a scarf but at least this way it may be ready for Autumn 2010!
Any way, as in the words of Be-Ro 1930 - 'the woman who can cook well and bake well has every reason and every right to feel proud'. Golly, if only it were that easy in 2010.

Pasque

A bright April morning,
A brisk April breeze,
It hops through the hedgerows,
It tickles the trees.
It dusts down the alleys,
Through houses in rows.
It whispers, it teases,
Wherever it goes.
And folk in the city,
Lift hopeful heads high,
To breathe in its freshness,
To feel it dance by.
They hear its glad message,
The promise thats clear:
The blue skies are coming,
Springtime is here!

Margaret Ingall.

Springtime is here!? Anyone visiting Scotland over the last week would beg to differ.

But I can't complain. Although we arrived in the aftermath it soon cleared and we had a few nice days (you couldn't even feel the cold if you wore thermal vest, long sleeved t-shirt, polo neck, tank top, coat, scarf, hat and hood)!

Anyway, we are back now. And the holiday, short but sweet, had a few highlights (bad camera is on the naughty step so no photos for now)!
  • both electric blankets worked
  • both children caught many frogs on our pond dipping afternoon
  • husband caught a fish in the river
  • we managed our hill walk (in the rain - it stopped when we arrived home)
  • I managed to do a bit of shopping

The best bit for me however was the pond dipping, I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE SEEN SO MUCH FROG SPAWN. It was utterley amazing, about a metre wide, a metre deep. I could have spent the whole day there. Frogs mating, frogs chilling, frogs swimming and . . . as son said 'can't I go back and look at that dead frog again?' (there were quite a few unfortunates as well).

Nature.

Plus two very wet children, wellies that needed emptying, clothes that needed drying, hands that needed washing. A sign that we had a really good family afternoon.

Followed by a Burger King

Hey I'm not supermum.

bad camera

I tried and I tried tonight to write a lovely blog with pictures but I am defeated and very unhappy now. I can't wait to tell you about my coffee kisses but it will have to wait until we get back from Scotland.

Happy Easter everybody.

missing friends

I love The Lady. My Gran used to get it and pass it on to my my Mum. The ads were always most interesting, searching for the perfect nanny, promoting the best villa for hire.

But, OMG! Channel 4 tonight. Talk about blowing it all out of the water. Rachael, the new 'attack dog' is (in her own words) 'finally here' and I feel so, so sorry for the staff. She really is a posh pitbull and for want of a better word is an utter cow.

I was really shocked by her ruthless backstabbing.

Bring back the old Editor I say. The Lady should be refined shouldn't it?

the pile deepens

How quickly time flies (when you're not having fun). It seems ages since I last blogged.

So here is another fly by night post, one without photos, sorry.

Mother's Day weekend was lovely, mainly because we managed to get out in the garden and I pegged my washing out for the first time this year! It made me really happy seeing washing drying on the line. It is amazing how a bit of sun, a couple of Primulas (pink and orange, my favorite colour combination at the moment) and a spot of weeding can really lift the soul after a crappy week.

The other thing lifting my soul at the moment is my new toy. Now, I'm not one for technology. Have only just recently got to grips with the computer. But I have fallen for my new phone.

It has been a tumultuous affair so far, could have so easily gone very wrong. But, after 50 minutes on the (home) phone to a lovely man at Orange I finally got to grips with my iphone on Saturday evening.

And ever since then I've been addicted. I have even been 'playing' with iphone instead of knitting (and variegated cardigan only needs her ends tying in then she's done). Looking for new free 'apps' to install (300 new every day apparently), getting excited when I realise I don't even need my ipod anymore!

This may all sound very sad but I'm not sorry. A vintage homebody at heart I still need to embrace all things modern.

If you have one, by the way, install fun mirror lite for free. It is absolutely hilarious, I was in tears tonight (in a good way). If you have a rather childish sense of humour you will totally split your sides.

It's always good to have a laugh.

Keep smiling.

colly wobbles

You know what they say about third time lucky.

The first time I tried to achieve a perfect jelly from mould it wouldn't release at all.

Tonight I left it in the water too long and it went rather runny round the egdes.

Am hoping that next time I will time it to perfection.

At least it kept a bit of shape!

Anyway, thought I would update you on the Mildred situation. Here she is with her two sisters and Dad. Peepo, can you see me?

Her situation is no better but no worse. She seems happy enough, enjoyed some sunbathing today and a nibble on the grass.

And hey, no run is needed, don't think she would (or could for that matter) run away!

On the knitting front my variegated cardigan is ever so nearly there, just one sleeve to go, but have a feeling it will be another 'never wear' garment! Will hopefully be able to show you it soon.

boyfriends

Spring is finally here, and I think I can feel it.

I have the beginnings of that funny feeling that I have only recently noticed I get every year around this time, and I can't quite explain what I mean.

It all started on Saturday morning when I had absolutely every intention of having a lie in but actually got up at 7.30 and was in town buying Mothers Day presents at 9. Odd. Come Sunday lunchtime we had already changed the living room into its 'Spring position' and cleared out the childrens wardrobes. Something is definitely in the air.

But that is all quite normal, spring cleaning and the alike. No, my feeling is rather different and sends me a bit mad. It's almost like I can't cope with Spring (as lovely as it is) and need to get to Summer. Maybe being a Winter baby has something to do with it?

Anyhow, enough of my rambling.

Life trundles on and I wonder what I can tell you about. Life is pretty mundane at the moment and I was thinking only this morning how lucky I am to have a craft. You know, what would I do without knitting?

When I have a rare few spare minutes what would I do? What did I used to do? Knitting (and crochet and sewing) keeps me going, it is a massive part of my life and without being too dramatic I 'am so glad I found you knitting'.

However, getting back to the 'what can I tell you' bit, and feeling very lacking in the inspiration department, here's a few bits;

the only pegs I will use are wooden pegs
I absolutely love Enya
Mildred is doing fine
I bought a Lloyd Loom chest for £5
I've not yet finished my variegated cardi, but I'm cracking on with it
or my shruggy thing
or my Granny square blanket
I'm trying to be restrained by not starting a cable scarf I want to knit
I'm starting to understand that blogging needs to be done in the day, 'cos this is going nowhere.

Happy Spring everybody, stay with me, it's only a passing phase, I'll be back to my normal self soon I hope!

local no news

what I am doing today;
cleaning, knit and knattering and having friends for tea

Phew. Today has been a long day.

And I am absolutely shattered.

A few hours in the local knitting shop was bliss and have excitingly (no, am sure thats not a real word) cast on a new project.

Yet another cardigan that I will never wear!
The yarn is very new to me. Very scary in fact. Not only is it acrylic but it is variegated. I normally have palpitations looking at this sort of yarn but I am being adventurous!

And actually, ten rows in, it is quite nice wondering when I will discover the next colour in the yarn.

It's sooo not me. Definitely not one of my 'yummy' pictures. Or you may disagree?

Why did I choose it? Heaven knows, but a change is as good as a rest isn't it?

Have I told you about our baby bunnies?

We have three, they are 8 weeks old now and quite big. Two have new homes to go to but the other is staying. It has spinal damage, goodness knows how long it will live it is a bag of bones. However, it has the nicest nature of the three and is the one that my daughter wanted to keep all along. How bittersweet is fate.

Meet Mildred, one of our six rabbits, the runt but everyones favorite;
and now one eye has closed up. Looks like its the vets for me again tomorrow.
Take care

looking after the past for the future

Hello. Just a quick post on a dull Sunday afternoon.

We have just returned back from a weekend visiting my parents in West Berkshire (and yes, of course I forgot my camera).

I always forget how much I like going back to this part of the country because all I think about is the loooong journey with two young children. We used to live and work in the area and my daughter was born close by in the neighbouring county of Hampshire. Anyway, I have lots of happy memories of our time there and, although it was a flying visit this time around, I always enjoy the change of scenery.

The car boot was inevitably fuller on the return journey, I did manage a few charity shops!

Another blanket, unfortunately not my favorite Witney but v. good Merino wool and I think it is kingsize!

In washer as we speak

and some new pots (have no idea where to put them, the dresser is starting to look overloaded, even in my eyes)

My tin collection has another new friend (just couldn't resist and it is useful as well)

Anyway, home again, Grandma has done homework and hairwashing so all that remains to be done are a few washer loads, a quick tea and sort out uniforms and bags for the last week at school before half term. Then I can start on the final bit of my year long blanket (that is one good thing about long car journeys, the blanket is now fully joined), and flick through the new 'Joules Early Spring Catazine' (their words not mine!)

Its starting to look more blankety, I can even fold it up!

Love these wellies - shame about the price, won't be getting them in a hurry.

see you soon, enjoy the last of your weekend.

ps. thank you to follower number two! this gets even more addictive when someone is reading, and thanks for the lovely comments people have left (can't believe I can finally say that, I have comments!!!! Wowee)

pps. just thought I would let you know that blog header photo shows some of my inherited collection of sewing goods from my Grandma. These beautiful items came in the chest I inherited and I will show you very soon!

excitement!

Today is truly a good day. I have my first bonafide follower. Thank you! May many more join you and may I deliver the goods!

creative writing

Wow. We have had more snow here. Fat heavy snowflakes fell for three hours and I was quite excited. Unfortunately it all seems to be melting today, I had high hopes for more school closures and days sledging but don't think that will happen again this winter.

My year long crochet blanket is getting nearer and nearer to completion but am finding the square joining rather tedious.

There are two hundred and twenty four squares altogether and although I have thoroughly enjoyed making it I am anxious now to get it finished, why is it that the last leg of a project is always the longest?

Other WIP's include the 'shruggy thing' I mentioned the other day;

I will wear it as in the last picture below;

Cowls seem to be a favorite of mine at the moment, quick and easy projects, I completed Maggi Knits Triangle Cowl a while ago and it is so lovely and cosy for winter but rather bulky!

Must dash, see you soon.

baby bunnies and getting the snip

Another week has passed. January has ended and February begins. I feel like the weeks are trundling along in a blur of grey. The weather is so dull and does not do much to inspire me into blog writing.
I have a new camera, did I tell you? It was a present from my husband for Christmas, a total surprise and shows that he actually does read AND pay attention to my ramblings.

So, today I decided to put it to good use, use it for what it is intended and take some pictures. Of course, I couldnt have picked a worse drab day (bring on the snow tomorrow I say, at least it is pretty).

But here goes. . . . . .
My latest craze for Ebay shows no signs of abating. It is very addictive, getting down to the last few minutes, cursing the person who trys to outbid you and clapping with glee when you beat them by 50p! With birthday money from my Gran I decided I would bid on an eiderdown. In actual fact I bid on two, well you never know, one or the other might be won.

I won both! The first by the skin of my teeth;

the second was a happy surprise, and a lot cheaper!

Both are completely beautiful and a welcome addition to my new bed.

Of course, since then have been bidding like craaaaaazy, and fortunately most items have been outbid. In some way my mind seems to short circuit when I see PLACE BID and I forget that I actually will need to pay for it if I win it.

Speaking of my latest craze it made me take a good look at what else I seem to crave (of course this is aside from the usuals that you know about, the vintage sheets, pillowcases and tablecloths, the lovely old china and the blankets and eiderdowns). My immediate answer, just looking around my house, is tin.

Now I know that seems rather odd but just wait. . .

Is it just me or are they just beautiful? I would love to run through the history of them all because they all have a tale as to how they got here but fear I would bore you too much (oooh, can't resist a few, 1950's tin, actually quite hidden in these photos was my Grans, Emma B square tins were a present on our 10th wedding anniversary, Cath K sewing tin was an Xmas pressie from my brother and sister in law and the Coronation vintage tin at the front was spotted in a charity shop by a friend for me). sorry!

Which reminds me, thrifting and charity shops, you have to be very lucky these days but I have been very lucky over the past few weeks.

I found two vintage Witney blankets in one shop for 99p each. YES, 99p each, I really couldnt contain my excitement (how sad is that).

The above said on the tag 'dog blanket', pardon, DOG BLANKET???, how posh are their dogs, these go for a lot more than 99p on Ebay and are too much of a treasure to shove under my dogs bottom (excuse the language).

the top pink cellular, also 99p is a lovely colour and has yet found no home.
On the 'making' front I am still busy with my year long crochet blanket but I am getting there and have started a shruggy sort of cowly scarf, no other way to describe it. I will show you very soon.
In the meantime, Happy February!
